“What’s that bit in the middle under the nose called?”
This is a common question I get asked and it’s called the ‘column’.
Surgeons call this the columella. The point is that patients do not need to know all the technical terms for the nose when they go and see their surgeon.
You just need to be clear on what your aspirations are and what you want to achieve. You should feel comfortable with your discussion with the surgeon.
Surgeons all strive to make sure the Columella is in the center so that the nostrils look even. In the weeks after surgery, there is always swelling and maybe some unevenness but this will improve over time as the swelling gets better.
We are proud of the whole team who published our work that focuses on the Columella in the American Journal of Plastic Surgery.
